Luzerne County Head Start Selected As One of 40 Outstanding Programs In The Nation

In observance of the 40th Anniversary of the Head Start program in the United States, the
National Head Start Association selected individuals and programs from throughout the
country to honor as outstanding examples of the quality and success of Head Start. Our
local program was chosen from among hundreds to receive three awards.

Outstanding Grantee: Luzerne County Head Start was selected as one of "40
Outstanding Grantees" in the provision of services to young children and their families based upon our performance in the areas of program management and the recognitions and accomplishments we have achieved.

Lifetime Achievement: Lena Taylor, Luzerne County Head Start's Social Service Specialist at the time of her death in 1997, was selected to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her exceptional dedication to the Head Start children and families and the positive impact she had on Head Start and the early childhood community.

Remarkable Head Start Success Stories- Even at a very early age, Dave Kuharchik knew what he wanted to do with the rest of his life-be a meteorologist. A Luzerne County Head Start graduate and recipient of an Alumni Scholarship and now a local television meteorologist, Dave was honored for his demonstrated outstanding record of success. Dave represented our organization at the National Head Start Association Annual Training Conference and participated in the awards ceremony.

Everyone at Luzerne County Head Start is proud of the program's accomplishments and these recognitions. We are equally thankful for having the opportunity to serve young children and their families. Early childhood education and family support are our staff's passion and they give it their best everyday.
